Bible In A Year | Read: 2 Timothy 3
2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. (2 Tim 3:2-5)
What will people say about you at your funeral? Every single time I have been to a funeral this question has popped into my head. I’ve been to some thatI am so challenged to live a better life and I’ve been to others where I think, I hope this isn’t my legacy. In 2 Timothy 3, Paul talks about two different types of people. There’s the ungodly people and the godly people. One day, you will be remembered as one of them.
The ungodly man has a long list of characteristics that I would hate to be known for. A lover of self, brutal, traitor, blasphemer and many more. What’s so scary about these characteristics though is that we naturally lean toward being this way. We have to purpose to live a godly life. For a season this lifestyle can even be pleasurable. But the ultimate pleasure is with God. “You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11).
Then there is the godly man. I love that Paul says, “But you…” (2 Timothy 3:10). He’s saying we don’t have to be the other person, the ungodly person. We can have purpose, we can have faith, we can persevere. And we can be encouraged by the words in Scripture knowing that it is completely inspired by God. I’ve often been told the Bible is an acronym for Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. God gave us this wonderful book to help us live the life He has for us. What will people say about you at your funeral? That can be answered in the way you live.
